Quick answer
Rimfire match ammo varies from lot to lot, so serious shooters test several lots in their own rifle and buy a large quantity of the winner. A home test: 3–5 lots, 5 × 10-shot groups each at 50 yd from a solid rest, same day, alternating lots. If you compete, Lapua's Rimfire Performance Centers (Mesa, AZ and Marengo, OH) machine-rest your barreled action and generally test eight lots in two to four hours. Buy enough of a good lot for at least a season.

What is an ammo lot?

A lot is one production run made with the same batch of components and machine settings. Makers print the lot number on the box or case. Within a lot, priming, powder charge and bullet weight are as consistent as the maker can manage; between lots, small differences can shift accuracy and velocity. That's why one lot of a match load can shoot brilliantly in your rifle and the next lot only average.

Do you need to lot test?

Before lot testing, make sure the rifle and shooter are ready: a stable rest, torqued action screws, a bore seasoned with the ammo you're testing, and a scope that's parallax-free at the test distance. Our ammo testing guide covers the brand-level first pass; this page is about lots.

A home lot-test plan

  1. Collect lots. Buy one box from each of 3–5 lots of the same product. Some retailers list lot numbers; local shops may let you check boxes.
  2. Season the bore. Fire 10–20 rounds of each lot before recording its groups.
  3. Shoot 5 × 10-shot groups per lot at 50 yd or 50 m. Ten-shot groups tell you more than five-shot groups for the same ammo.
  4. Alternate lots through the session so wind and light changes affect every lot, not just the last one.
  5. Record conditions with wind flags or a Kestrel 2500NV.
  6. Chronograph with a Garmin Xero C1 Pro if you have one. Low standard deviation is a useful tie-breaker, but small groups at distance are what count.
  7. Confirm at 100 yd with the top two lots if you shoot that far. Lapua tests at 50 and 100 m for that reason [1].

Factory test centers

Lapua, through Capstone Precision Group in the US, runs two Rimfire Performance Centers: West in Mesa, Arizona and East in Marengo, Ohio. Staff remove the barreled action, mount it in a bedding block on a return-to-battery fixture and fire from a machine rest at 50 and 100 m simultaneously. They generally test eight lots per rifle, re-test promising lots, and take two to four hours; mailed-in rifles get results by email [1] [2]. One owner's trip report walks through the process [3]. Call for current pricing, minimum purchases and scheduling.

How much of a good lot should you buy?

Enough that you won't need to re-test mid-season. Estimate your yearly round count (practice plus matches) and buy at least that much. If budget is tight, split it: a tested lot for matches and a cheaper load for fundamentals practice.

Storing your lot

When a lot stops shooting

If a proven lot suddenly opens up, check the rifle first: action screw torque, scope mounts, a fouled or freshly cleaned bore, a loose suppressor. Then check yourself and the conditions. Only after that suspect the ammo. A new barrel, chassis or tuner setting can change which lot shoots best, so re-test after major changes. Our troubleshooting guide has a checklist.

Common mistakes

Gear that helps

Reading your results honestly

Small samples fool everyone. A lot that wins one 5-shot group may lose the next five. Average several 10-shot groups, look for consistency (the gap between best and worst group), and only call a winner if the difference repeats across sessions. If two lots are close, pick the one with the lower velocity spread, or simply the one you can buy more of. Write down the losers too, so you don't re-test them next year.

Sharing lots with a club

Some clubs pool orders so several members can test and buy the same lot. Each rifle still needs its own test; a lot that shoots well in one barrel may not in another.

FAQ

Why does .22 LR accuracy change between lots?

Each lot is a separate production run, and small component and process differences change how it performs in a given barrel.

How many lots should I test?

Three to five is a practical home test. Lapua's test centers generally test eight lots per rifle.

Where can I get my rifle lot tested?

Lapua's Rimfire Performance Centers in Mesa, Arizona and Marengo, Ohio test Lapua lots from a machine rest at 50 and 100 m.

How much ammo should I buy from a good lot?

At least a season's worth, so you don't have to re-test mid-season.
