Anschutz rimfire models explained: 64, 1416/1517 and 1761 for American shooters

Quick answer
Anschutz builds rimfires on separate action families. The Match 64 is used in the 64 MP R and the 1416 (.22 LR) and 1517 (.17 HMR) sporters. Anschutz says it's unique and not interchangeable with its other actions. The 1761 is the newer 3-lug, 60° sporter/varmint action. Choose 64-based rifles for value and target heritage, and the 1761 for a modern hunting/precision sporter.

We haven't tested this hands-on yet. Everything below comes from manufacturer specs, regulations and published sources, cited inline. Prices are maker MSRPs as listed in October 2026 unless noted.

Match 64 sporters

Anschutz's 2004 sporter catalog lists a 23 in barrel, a single-stage trigger factory-set at 2.5 lb and a weight of about 5.5 lb for the standard sporters. The heavy-barrel versions weigh 6.2 lb [1]. Current models and options vary; check Anschutz North America for what's imported now [2].

The 64 MP R is the target-stock version with a 25.5 in heavy barrel [6]. It's the subject of our Anschutz vs CZ 457 MTR comparison.

Barrel fitting

Anschutz says 64-series barrels are press-fit with one horizontal locking pin, and 1900/1700-series barrels are press-fit with two vertical pins [2]. In practice that means barrel swaps are factory or gunsmith work, unlike the user-swappable CZ 457 (see CZ 457 barrel swaps).

Left-handed Anschutz

Left-hand actions listed by Anschutz North America include the 1416 L and 1727 L [2]. More options: left-handed .22 rifles.

FAQ

Is the Anschutz 1416 a Match 64 action?

Yes. Anschutz's sporter catalog lists the 1416, 1516 and 1517 as Match 64 action sporters.

Can I swap stocks between an Anschutz 64 and a 1761?

No. Anschutz says 64-based actions are unique and not interchangeable with its other actions.

Can I change an Anschutz barrel at home?

Not like a CZ 457. Anschutz barrels are press-fit and pinned, so a barrel swap is gunsmith or factory work.
