Quick answer
Short answer: a .22 LR barrel shooting lead bullets generally doesn't need a centerfire-style break-in. Lilja says its rimfire barrels are ready to shoot and recommends only light cleaning. Krieger notes rimfires can take hundreds of rounds to settle. Just shoot your chosen ammo, keep notes, and don't judge accuracy on the first box.

What barrel makers say

A sensible routine for a new .22

  1. Clean out any preservative before the first shot (the rifle manual will say how) [3] [4].
  2. Shoot a few hundred rounds of the ammo you plan to use. Lead and lube "season" the bore.
  3. Only then start lot testing. See ammo lot testing.
  4. After cleaning, expect a few fouling shots before groups settle. See cold-bore troubleshooting.

A coated one-piece rod and a rimfire solvent like Rimfire Blend Check price on Amazon cover it. Full routine: rimfire cleaning and maintenance.

FAQ

Should I break in a new .22 LR barrel?

Not in the centerfire shoot-and-clean sense. Barrel makers like Lilja recommend minimal cleaning with lead-bullet ammo.

How often should I clean a .22 barrel?

Lilja suggests dry patches around every 100 rounds and a brush in the leade every 200–300 rounds.

Why does my rifle shoot worse right after cleaning?

A clean .22 bore often needs several fouling shots before point of impact settles.
