Quick answer
Clean a user-serviceable .22 can about every 1,000 rounds, sooner with dirty ammo. That's SilencerCo's guidance for the Sparrow 22. Disassemble it, scrape or soak the baffles in a non-corrosive solvent, and dry everything before reassembly. Follow your can's manual: some methods (and some chemicals) damage aluminum.

How often

SilencerCo recommends cleaning the Sparrow 22 about every 1,000 rounds, and more often with especially dirty or lead-heavy ammo [1] [2]. Rimfire ammo is dirty: lead, lube and unburned powder build up fast, so a can that won't come apart gets heavier and harder to service.

The process (user-serviceable cans)

  1. Make sure the rifle is unloaded, then remove the can.
  2. Disassemble per the manual. On the Sparrow, the back cap unscrews, the tube slides off, and the core separates [1].
  3. Scrape heavy deposits, then soak or wipe the internals with a non-corrosive solvent [1].
  4. Don't put the outer tube in solvent or an ultrasonic cleaner if your manual says not to (the Sparrow's says not to) [1].
  5. Dry fully, lightly grease the threads if the manual says so, and reassemble.

FAQ

How often should I clean a .22 suppressor?

SilencerCo recommends about every 1,000 rounds for the Sparrow 22, more often with dirty ammo.

Can I put my can in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Only if the manual allows it. SilencerCo's Sparrow manual says not to use solvent or ultrasonic cleaning on the outer tube.

What about sealed rimfire cans?

Sealed cans can't be properly cleaned. That's why most current .22 suppressors are user-serviceable.
