What the rules say
- Eligibility: Semi-Auto is "available for any competitor without restrictions to price or attachments." A semi-auto reloads automatically after each shot from a magazine [1] [2].
- Safety: semi-autos may move between positions with a closed bolt, but the mechanical safety must be engaged and the shooter must call "safe" [1].
- Other divisions: Semi-Auto shooters may choose another division if they meet its requirements [1]. A semi-auto under the $1,650 rifle-plus-scope MSRP cap could shoot Base if it also follows Base's stock and trigger rules.
- Everything else is the same: .22 LR, removable magazines, the same courses of fire and scoring. Follow your match director's safety briefing.

Reliability first
A stoppage costs more time on the clock than a slightly bigger group. Before your first match:
- Run several hundred rounds of your match ammo through every magazine you'll use.
- Blowback semi-autos often cycle best on high-velocity ammo; standard-velocity match ammo may short-stroke some rifles. Test, don't assume.
- Number your magazines and retire any that cause problems.
- Clean the bolt face and chamber more often than on a bolt gun, because fouling builds faster. See cleaning and maintenance.
Optics
NRL22 targets run out to 100 yd and stages often need holds at different distances, so a first-focal-plane mil scope is the common choice. With no price cap you can go premium, but a mid-range FFP scope is plenty to start: Arken EPL-4 4-16x44 FFP, Primary Arms SLx 4-16x44 FFP, Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50 FFP. A 4–16x scope is lighter and gives a wider field of view for quick target changes. See MOA vs MRAD.

Setup checklist
- Stable support: a bipod (Harris S-LM, with a LaRue Picatinny adapter on railed stocks) and a barricade bag (Armageddon Gear Game Changer).
- Sling: Magpul MS1 for positional stages.
- Cheek weld: semi-auto stocks often need a riser with a scope; get a consistent head position before chasing accuracy.
- Safety habit: practice engaging the safety and calling "safe" every time you move. It's the rule that sets this division apart.
- Data card: a 50 yd zero and holds out to 100 yd; see drop and wind charts.
Accuracy expectations
Semi-autos generally group larger than match bolt guns, but published, comparable data on factory 10/22s is limited, so we won't quote numbers we can't source. NRL22 targets are sized for their distances; a reliable rifle with consistent ammo and good wind calls scores well. Compare published data in T1x vs 10/22 and CZ 457 vs 10/22.
Ammo
- Start with a few boxes of each: CCI Mini-Mag (high velocity), CCI Standard Velocity, SK Standard Plus.
- Pick the most accurate load that cycles 100% in your rifle, then buy that lot in bulk; see the lot buying guide.
Match-day tips
- Load magazines the night before and carry spares.
- Bring a cleaning rod to clear a stuck case: nylon-coated 36 in rod.
- Practice with a shot timer for stage pacing.
- Wear eye and ear protection; semi-autos throw brass toward neighbors (Radians glasses, Impact Sport muffs).
Semi-Auto or Base?
If your semi-auto and scope total under the $1,650 MSRP cap and you haven't changed the stock or trigger, you could enter Base [1]. Many semi-auto shooters choose Semi-Auto anyway to compete against similar rifles. Bolt-gun Base builds are in NRL22 Base builds.
Common stoppages and quick fixes
- Failure to feed: check magazine lips and spring; try a different magazine.
- Failure to eject: clean the extractor and chamber; try higher-velocity ammo.
- Light strikes: clean the firing pin channel and check for debris.
FAQ
Is there a price limit in NRL22 Semi-Auto?
No. The 2027 rules say Semi-Auto has no restrictions on price or attachments.
What is the safety rule for semi-autos in NRL22?
You may move with the bolt closed, but the mechanical safety must be engaged and you must call "safe".
Can a 10/22 shoot NRL22?
Yes, in the Semi-Auto division, or in Base if the rifle plus scope MSRP is under the cap and it meets Base's stock and trigger rules.
Does semi-auto ammo need to be high velocity?
Many blowback semi-autos cycle best on high-velocity ammo. Test your match load for 100% cycling first.
