Eliminating Stovepipes & Light Strikes: Volquartsen Bolt Tune-Up & Reliability Guide

Quick answer
If a clean rifle still stovepipes or light-strikes, the extractor or firing pin may be worn. Volquartsen sells an Exact Edge extractor for the 10/22 (VC10EE, $14.25) and M&P 15-22 (VC15EE, $14.25), a SureStrike firing pin for the 10/22 (VC10SSFP, $37) and M&P 15-22 (VC15FP, $35), and a 10/22 Bolt Tune-Up Kit with both (VC10FE, $43), prices as listed Oct 14, 2026. Volquartsen lists no extractor or firing pin for the CZ 457 or Bergara B-14R. Clean first, test other ammo, and use a gunsmith if you're not sure.

We haven't installed or tested these parts ourselves. Specs, claims and prices come from Volquartsen's product pages, checked Oct 14, 2026 and cited inline. Volquartsen's descriptions are the maker's claims, not our results.

Safety first. Extractors and firing pins control how a cartridge is held and fired. Work only on an unloaded rifle with the magazine out and ammunition out of the room. Follow the maker's instructions and your rifle's manual; if you aren't confident, have a gunsmith install and function-check these parts. A wrong or damaged firing pin can cause misfires or out-of-battery problems.

Rimfire dry-fire: on most rimfires the firing pin can strike the chamber edge when there's no cartridge. Ruger recommends snap caps for extensive 10/22 dry firing [1] and CZ discourages excessive dry firing of the 457 [2]. Don't dry-fire to "test" a new pin without a rimfire snap cap.

Competition rules: NRL22 Semi-Auto has no attachment restrictions [3], but Base division limits changes to the factory rifle. Other matches have their own rules. Check your league's current rulebook and ask your match director before you change parts.

1. Anatomy of rimfire malfunctions

Wax, lube and fouling

.22 LR bullets carry a wax or lube coating, and that residue plus powder fouling collects on the bolt face, under the extractor hook and in the chamber. In a blowback semi-auto, the extractor has to grip the rim hard enough to pull a case that's stuck to a fouled chamber. Gunk under the hook, or a sticky chamber, is the most common cause of a stovepipe. That's why cleaning comes before parts: see our cleaning guide and troubleshooting decision tree.

Tolerances

Small dimensions matter. Volquartsen says it moved the hook of its M&P 15-22 extractor .015 in closer to the rim and changed its angle [4], and that its 10/22 extractor hook sits .005 in closer to the rim, held to +/-.0001 in by EDM [5]. These are the maker's figures.

Stamped vs wire-EDM extractors

Volquartsen's argument for its Exact Edge extractors: they're wire-EDM cut from A2 tool steel and hardened to Rc 58-60, and the maker says extractors "made from stamped steel or titanium" can have their edges roll over and cause extraction problems after a short period of use [5]. That's a maker claim; we haven't measured wear on any extractor. The 10/22 version also has a chamfered bottom edge that Volquartsen says stops it catching the next round as it feeds [5].

Firing pin tip geometry

A rimfire primes the rim, so the pin has to crush the rim against the chamber edge. Volquartsen's M&P 15-22 SureStrike pin has "more material than factory" and a contact point moved "to cover more of the rim," CNC machined from S7 tool steel [6]. Its 10/22 SureStrike pin is EDM machined from A2 tool steel, hardened to Rc 56-58, has a surface-ground impact section, and is .004 in wider than factory to reduce side-to-side movement in the bolt [7]. Light strikes can also come from a weak hammer spring, fouling in the pin channel, or a hard-primed ammo lot, so check those too.

Bolt actions: CZ 457 and Bergara B-14R

Volquartsen lists no extractors, extractor springs or firing pins for the CZ 457 or Bergara B-14R (site searches, Oct 14, 2026), and we didn't find an aftermarket "upgrade" part for either that we could verify. Bolt actions extract by hand, so they don't stovepipe. If yours struggles to extract or light-strikes, clean the bolt face and chamber, try other ammo, and if it continues, get factory replacement parts through CZ-USA or Bergara support or a gunsmith. See bolt-action troubleshooting.

3. Bench install walkthrough (overview)

Follow the manufacturer's instructions. This is an overview, not a substitute for Volquartsen's own installation videos [12] or your rifle's manual. If you're unsure, have a gunsmith do it. We haven't performed these installs for this article.

  1. Make it safe: unload, magazine out, chamber checked, ammo out of the room, eye protection on.
  2. Remove the bolt as your rifle's manual describes.
  3. Contain the extractor plunger and spring. Both the 10/22 and M&P 15-22 extractors are held by a small spring-loaded plunger. Work inside a clear bag or over a parts tray and keep a thumb or a small punch on the plunger as the extractor comes out. A spare plunger and spring (VF15BPS for the M&P 15-22 [8]) is cheap insurance.
  4. Fit the new extractor with the plunger and spring seated, and check it pivots and snaps back freely.
  5. Firing pin: replace it per the maker's video for your platform [12]. Check the new pin moves freely in its channel with no binding.
  6. Safe function check, unloaded: reassemble, confirm the safety works, and cycle the action by hand. Check firing pin function only with a rimfire snap cap or under a gunsmith's supervision, never by dry-firing on an empty chamber.
  7. Live check at the range: load one round at a time at first, then a full magazine, and stop if you see any failures.

FAQ

Will a new extractor stop my 10/22 stovepiping?

Maybe. Volquartsen says its VC10FE kit is designed to eliminate light hits and stovepipes, but fouling, ammo that doesn't cycle the action, and magazine problems cause stovepipes too. Clean first and test other ammo.

Is the Volquartsen 10/22 firing pin titanium?

No. The SureStrike pin for the 10/22 (VC10SSFP) is A2 tool steel hardened to Rc 56-58. Volquartsen's only titanium firing pin is for its own Summit rifle.

What is the M&P 15-22 SureStrike pin made of?

Volquartsen says S7 tool steel, CNC machined. It doesn't publish a hardness for that pin.

Are there Volquartsen extractors for the CZ 457 or Bergara B-14R?

No. Volquartsen listed none when we checked on Oct 14, 2026.

Can I dry-fire to test a new firing pin?

Not on an empty chamber. Use a rimfire snap cap. Ruger recommends snap caps for extensive 10/22 dry firing and CZ discourages excessive dry firing of the 457.
