Which upgrade first: trigger or barrel?
Trigger first. A lighter, cleaner break helps every shot and costs a fraction of a barrel. Upgrade the barrel only after you've lot-tested ammo (ammo testing) and confirmed the factory barrel is the limit. Remember that in NRL22 Base, aftermarket barrels must match factory spec [1], so a match prefit moves you to Open.
CZ 457 trigger options
| Option | Price seen | What owners and makers report |
|---|---|---|
| YoDave trigger spring kit | $19.95 | Owners report consistent pulls around 10 oz. Some adjust lighter after polishing, with careful bump and drop testing [2] |
| CZ lighter trigger spring | $22.40 | Factory part via cz-parts.com |
| Timney CZ 457 (curved or straight) | $174.99 | Drop-in, adjustable from about 10 oz to 2 lb; RH and LH. Some owners prefer it over a YoDave-tuned factory trigger, which can feel "notchy" |
| JARD CZ 457 | $179.95 | Spring ranges 3–6, 7–10 and 11–12 oz; straight or curved shoe |
| CZ Flyweight (two-stage) | $448.44 | CZ's own match trigger |
TriggerTech does not list a CZ 457 trigger. Safety: after any trigger work, do a bump test (bolt closed, safety off, rap the stock) and a safety test. If anything is marginal, go back to a heavier setting.
CZ 457 barrel options
The CZ 457 uses a barrel held by two screws in the receiver, so swapping barrels is a home job with a headspace check. Factory and aftermarket options:
| Barrel | Price seen | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CZ 457 Varmint barrel set | $299 | Factory, 20 in nitride |
| CZ 457 MTR barrel sets | $399–$409 | Factory match-chamber barrels, 16.5–24 in |
| Area 419 CZ 457 prefit Lilja | $525–$650 [3] | .902 in straight taper, 1:16, 5-groove, 1/2x28, Bentz chamber headspaced to .045 in ±.001. No shims included or needed per Area 419; may need hand fitting on CZ 455s |
| Lilja drop-in (direct) | $555 (+$100 threading) | 3-groove, ships with shims per owners [4] |
| IBI Wait-Less drop-in | $599.99–$649.99 | .920 in contour |
| Whidden prefits | $385–$765 | Bartlein, Criterion, Lothar blanks |
| Grey Birch Danger Noodle | $399.99–$449.99 | Carbon-wrapped 416SS |
Headspace: barrels that use shims are set with a headspace gauge or a go-gauge method; one experienced owner describes a .043 in setting that works well with SK ammo [4]. Follow the barrel maker's instructions. Our CZ 457 gunsmithing page covers barrel-swap steps and torque.

Because the T1x takes T3/T3x triggers, the same unit can move to your centerfire later, or match it now (trainer guide).
Tikka T1x barrel options
Fewer options exist because the T1x isn't designed for user barrel swaps the way the CZ 457 is. Sources disagree on how the T1x barrel is retained, so use a gunsmith. Options in our database: IBI Wait-Less T1x (22 in), Whidden T1x prefits, and Lothar Walther stainless prefits (non-USD pricing). If barrel swaps matter to you, that's a strong reason to choose the CZ 457 (comparison).
Upgrade paths by budget
- Under $50: spring kit plus a lot test. This is the biggest bang for the buck.
- $175–$255: a drop-in trigger (Timney/JARD for CZ, TriggerTech/Timney for T1x).
- $300–$650: a factory MTR barrel set (CZ) or a prefit barrel. Plan for an Open-division rifle.
- Then a chassis: chassis builds.
Tools you'll need
- An inch-pound torque driver with the right bits (Torx/hex as specified).
- A headspace gauge or the barrel maker's recommended method for CZ barrel swaps.
- Thread locker only where the maker specifies it.
- A trigger pull gauge to confirm weight after adjustment.
How to judge whether an upgrade worked
Shoot a baseline first: five 5-shot groups at 50 yd with your best lot before the change, then the same after, in similar conditions. Change one thing at a time. If the average group doesn't improve, the upgrade may have improved feel (a cleaner trigger) without measurable accuracy gains. That's still worthwhile for positional shooting, but it's worth knowing.
Upgrades on other platforms
If you're choosing a rifle partly for upgrades, compare aftermarket depth. The Savage Mark II and the Ruger 10/22 also have large trigger and barrel aftermarkets. The Bergara B-14R and Vudoo use Rem 700-pattern triggers, which opens up the widest centerfire trigger catalogue. The Ruger American Rimfire and Bergara BMR have fewer options:

FAQ
What is the best trigger upgrade for a CZ 457?
For about $20, a YoDave spring kit (owners report about 10 oz pulls). For a drop-in, the Timney CZ 457 ($174.99, adjustable from about 10 oz to 2 lb) or the JARD ($179.95).
Do I need shims for an Area 419 Lilja CZ 457 barrel?
Area 419 says its prefit Lilja barrels are headspaced to .045 in and do not include or need shims on CZ 457s. CZ 455s may need hand fitting.
What trigger fits a Tikka T1x?
T3/T3x-pattern triggers, such as the TriggerTech Tikka Special or Diamond, the Timney #430 and the Bix'n Andy Dakota.
Can I change a T1x barrel at home?
It isn't designed for user swaps like the CZ 457. Use a gunsmith with a prefit such as IBI or Whidden.
